1960- THE AGE OF SONDHEIM Events in the 1960's had their effect at last on the musical, forcing it to accept other forms beyond the Rodgers and Hammerstein formula. Although some composers adhered to their rules, like Jerry Herman, others did not. The “concept musicals” of Kander and Ebb were hits and Stephen Sondheim became a force to reckon with. The age of Sondheim had begun.
